Summer Survival for Christian Working Moms: Activities to Engage Kids (Without Exhausting You)
Summer break can be a blessing—but let's be honest, it can also be overwhelming. As Christian working moms, we want our children to thrive, grow, and make joyful memories over the summer, but between work responsibilities, household tasks, and everything else life throws our way, creating Pinterest-perfect schedules isn’t always realistic. And that’s okay.
The good news? You don’t have to do it all. With a little planning, a few creative ideas, and a whole lot of grace, your family can enjoy a meaningful, fun-filled summer that draws you closer together and closer to God. Below are age group activities designed to keep your kids entertained, nurtured, and growing in faith, while still allowing you space to breathe.
For Preschoolers & Toddlers (Ages 1–5)
Little ones crave routine and movement. Here are some easy ways to fill their days while you knock a few things off the to-do list:
Bible Story Time & Coloring: Start the morning with a short Bible story and simple coloring pages that relate to the message. Even just 10 minutes can plant seeds of faith. These coloring pages coordinate with The Jesus Storybook Bible - hands down my fav kid Bible.
Water Play with Purpose: Set up a kiddie pool or water table with cups, toys and sponges. Use the time to talk about how God made water and how He refreshes us.
“But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life”
Music & Movement: Let them dance to worship songs for a fun and uplifting activity.
Library Story Hours: Many libraries host free summer story times that are educational and entertaining - several schedule them on weekends as well, which is such a benefit to working moms.
Toddler Nature Walks: Take a break from the computer to model the importance of rest. A slow-paced walk in a local park becomes an adventure when you point out God’s creation—“Look at the ants! God made those!”
For Elementary Kids (Ages 6–10)
This age group thrives on creativity, independence and learning through play.
DIY Devotional Journals: Give your kids a notebook (here’s one we like) for them to write prayers, draw pictures of Bible stories, or list things they're thankful for. Provide them with fun stickers and colorful markers so they can personalize and decorate their journals.
Build-a-Fort Camp: Turn the family room into a mini camp. Have the kids pitch in to build an epic fort using sheets, pillows, furniture to create a cozy space. Once the fort is complete hop inside and read a short Bible story, sing songs, or do a craft together.
STEM with Scripture: Create simple science experiments (like making slime or volcanoes) and tie in a Bible truth like, “God gives us minds to discover amazing things!”
Vacation Bible School (VBS): Many churches offer week-long VBS programs. They’re fun, faith-focused, and give moms and dads a break!
Service Projects: Help your kids organize a lemonade stand or bake sale for a cause. Use the opportunity to teach about giving and serving like Jesus.
For Tweens & Teens (Ages 11–17)
Older kids seek purpose, social connection, and autonomy. Summer is a perfect time to help them grow spiritually and practically.
Faith & Film Nights: Watch a faith-based family movie together once a week and discuss the themes. Let them lead the conversation.
Teen Prayer Journal Challenge: Encourage your teen to do daily devotionals and keep a prayer journal. You can use a teen-centered devotional to help guide them or encourage them to read through the Psalms. Our daughter was recently gifted this Bible she can fill with her own art .
Life Skills with Purpose: Teach them cooking, budgeting, or basic household duties, while discussing how God equips us to steward our gifts and resources. Here’s one we just signed up for.
Church Youth Groups or Camps: These can be life-changing for teens. Look for local day camps or overnight options that focus on discipleship and connection. Check out this blog for camp discounts if you’re local to Raleigh!
Volunteering: Help them find a place to serve—at a food pantry, church nursery, or animal shelter. Service can reveal calling and build character.
A Word of Encouragement for Busy Moms
God knew you’d be a working mom in this season. He’s not asking you to do it all—He’s asking you to walk with Him, trust Him, and love your family well.
“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Some days will be messy. Some days might include a little too much screen time. But if your home is filled with grace, laughter, and a few moments of intentional connection, that’s more than enough.
This summer, let go of perfection and lean into presence. You’ve got this—with God’s help.
