Making Room: A Summer Blog Series on Christlike Hospitality
by Kesa Ennen
One of my favorite things to do when I travel is find a local coffee shop to try. On our recent spring break trip, the coffee shop I frequented that week had something unexpected at the pickup counter - a hardback journaling Bible, laid open with a pen resting on its pages.
Customers were invited to find a favorite passage and leave their mark. Some underlined, others drew hearts, circled words or drew arrows pointing to verses important to them. Then they signed their name on the line beside the scripture they chose.
I stood there in awe of the simple beauty of it. Strangers connecting over the Bible and pages filled with fingerprints of faith. As I waited for my own coffee that day, my children and I added our own names. I later ordered a similar Bible to place on the foyer table in our own home.
Now, every guest is invited to sign their own name as they enter our home. It has become a treasured addition that not only makes people pause and reflect, but it encourages us to open our doors more often to keep filling the pages.
The simple gesture offered by a coffee shop 300 miles from home stirred a longing to cultivate a home and a life even more focused on hospitality. It’s not the polished Pinterest-worthy kind, but one rooted in faith. It is a kind that makes space for others.
I’m inviting you to join me for a four-part blog series about Biblical hospitality - what it means, why it matters and how we can incorporate it in our everyday lives.
Here’s what we will cover:
May - Biblical Hospitality: Welcoming Others as Christ Welcomed Us
June - The Heart of Hospitality: Serving with a Christlike Attitude
July - Hospitality as Ministry: Using Your Home for Kingdom Impact
August - Overcoming Barriers to Hospitality
Whether you’re a natural or a newbie to hosting, my hope is that this series encourages you to see hospitality not as something to perfect, but as a biblical practice to pursue.
Let’s open the door together!
